We see this as a challenge to do even more

A proud day for all of us vzaarians today as we picked up an eBay Star Developer award for Best Design at eBay DevCon. Kyozou got the top prize and we're runners up: the first and only video company to do so out of the 14 permitted video providers for eBay even though we're the youngest. Which confirms, rather nicely, recent research we've done showing vzaar to be the largest bespoke video provider on eBay too.

What was most gratifying were the reasons we won the award. When we got the call, a few weeks back, eBay said that they really liked how we had designed our player and system around eBay. We know that video itself improves the buyer experience, but eBay liked how we were also improving the seller experience too and doing more than "just putting video into eBay". It was this "more" bit where they felt we really shone and made the difference.

I'm really proud of what the team has accomplished here. Everyone in the team has contributed to that little bit of "more" in vzaar, from pure design elements to customer insight (and related product improvements) to technical tweaks to get it right. Design as Steve Jobs keeps telling us isn't about how it looks, but about how it works. And Steve knows a thing or two about iconic design. (We like to set our goals high.)

My first thought, however after winning this award and looking down the list of great companies that also have picked up awards is,  "Next time I want to pick up the winner's award". We're not resting on our laurels here at vzaar towers, and we have plans and ideas that are really truly exciting. Some things we want to bring to you, beyond making the platform quicker and easier and better all round are things like, HiDef videos, wides-screen players, multi-channel players for those of you who sell off eBay and custom skins to fit even better with your chosen templates.

Watch this space is what I am trying to say, as we have lots more coming. The office was already buzzing with the announcement of the eBay Echo platform. vzaar in Selling Manager...hell yes! We're already thinking of what great functionality we can bring to you right into your my eBay pages. I'm already tracking down the right eBay chaps to get into the alpha program.

What a great way to start off eBay Live, and the next few days are going to be fantastic fun. Stop by at booth 224 and say 'Hi' if you're in Chicago this week.

New Features. Round 2.

We're always so grateful to our customers for their feedback. At vzaar we know video and we know eBay but what we don't always know is how you run your business, what you need to be as efficient as possible and what you'd like to see from vzaar. We believe that a good company listens to what it's customers need. It's because of the time you've taken to let us know these things that we are able to give you what you need rather than what we think you need!

Here's a quick overview of some of the new features our developers have been building for you:

Automatic re-listing. This is the one that most of you have been after. Being a hugely complicated job meant it took a little longer than we first thought - "automatic re-listing" means the video player, with all of it's dynamic information about your auction, will update on it's own if it re- lists. There's now no need for you to let the system know. So if you use automation to relist your items - the vzaar videos will be present and correct in all your listings ad infinitum.

Copy and pasting embed code. You should now easily be able to find the code needed to manually embed your video - both on and off eBay. On eBay, this is very helpful if you have a smart template you want to place a video neatly in. And quoting from Tamebay, who reported on this a couple of weeks ago "It makes life very easy for sellers using a standard “About Me” video in all of their auctions as it can be inserted in their auction template and then the template used for all future listings." (This should help you with html code and embedding if it's not your strong point)

Buy Now button. Many of you found the Bid Now button unhelpful as it wasn't relevant to the listings that were of the "Buy Now" variety. Our player now has the added ability to recognise what type of auction it is sitting it and display the correct call to action.

bidbuy.jpg

The last 30 mins. While your listing is in it's last half hour the count down timer and Bid/Buy Now call to action turn red. The aim of which is to instill a sense of urgency on your buyers to encourage bids.

vzaarvideo.jpg

Seller Profiles. You will now be able to see a vzaar seller profile which will serve to better promote your other items on eBay.

So those are the next round of vzaar features we hope you'll like. Please continue to give us feedback - both good and bad (dare I say it) as it's all extremely helpful and much appreciated!

New Site! New Functionality!

This post may come a little late but just for those who haven’t noticed, I’m pleased to announce vzaar’s new site launch!

As of yesterday afternoon, vzaar has had a bit of a face lift. When I say face lift, what I really mean to say is that it’s had a redesign, re-brand and significant structural overhaul. Our designer, Mauricio has done us proud, as has our architect Jonathan, both of whom have been working all hours to get this new site up and running, so we thank them very much and hope they take a good twenty minute tea break before getting started on our next plan...

Not only have we got a new site and a new video engine but we’ve also taken into account lots of your suggestions and developed some more functionality that should make selling with video on eBay even easier. If you are using videos more and more in your business, you might benefit from buying one of our premium packages. They allow you to:

  • Search Find the listings you want to using the item number or the item name to search.

  • More videos Increase the number of videos you can embed each month.

  • Multiple embed tools Embed one video into multiple listings with one click.

  • Upload Increase the Gb monthly limit.

  • Length Upload longer videos. Up to 3 minutes.

Have a look see at our premium packages page. Jamie “6 takes” Parkins has made a video that explains it all.

We sincerely hope you like the new stuff. We love the site but we’ve been immersed in it for a couple of months and so are a bit biased and would love to know what you think.

Is it Remarkable?

Seth Godin, the godfather of modern marketing, has written many books on what it takes to get your product or services noted in today’s market. Considering many markets today are saturated, some veering more toward flooded, his insights are extremely helpful.

What stands out from his very readable book, Purple Cow, is whether a new product is “remarkable” or not. And in this case “remarkable” can be taken to mean - is it worth remarking on? The Purple Cow reference come from his analogy that as we see cows all the time and due to their common place appearance we virtually ignore them. If one day we drove past a cow that was purple it would more likely grab our attention and prompt us to remark on it... or make us crash the car.

Here’s a video of the talk he gave at the prestigious TED talks - which gets big thinkers together to share their ideas.

My point in sharing this with you is because I’m building up to the question, “Are eBay listings for particular products like ordinary cows?” And if in some cases that is true, what can be done to make the listings more remarkable?

Why not use YouTube?

We’ve had lots of feedback from our users, visitors, partners and investors which is always hugely appreciated. (Good and bad.) One of the reoccurring themes we’ve encountered is “Why not use YouTube?”. A good question and one I’ll use this blog post to answer.

YouTube is a brilliant website; a phenomenon really. Highly entertaining and built for that purpose, it’s a joy to use. vzaar, on the other hand, has been built for eBay users. Both serious and casual sellers alike, with your commerce interests in mind.

YouTube isn’t tricky to use, however vzaar is a cinch in comparison allowing you to embed video into your listings in just 2 clicks after you have uploaded. This also means that there is no need to alter or insert any html code as our engine does all that for you.

In addition to the ease of use, the vzaar video player contains vital info for the buyer; sellers feedback, bidding time left on the auction and the ever crucial “Bid Now” button - a call to action that encourages sellers to bid on the item at any point when watching the video.

As we all know, one of YouTube’s core strengths is that it is excellent at promoting other videos - allowing you to remain entertained for many hours by other videos...much to the anguish of employers the world over. However we believe this isn’t ideal behavior for a user watching YOUR sales video - you want them to stay with you and your business, not go to a competitor. Your vzaar video encourages watchers to view only your other videos on vzaar, ensuring the customers attention remains with you and your business.

YouTube is free... and so is vzaar. We have developed further functionality that will allow you easily manage your large numbers of videos, add them to multiple listings in one go, search your listings, use smart templates with video and these services will be available at a reasonable upgrade fee.

There are many other reasons I would personally chose to use vzaar over YouTube. The look of the player, the advanced management tools, the listing and selling advice and the eBay templates name a few. However the joy of the internet remains in the availability of choice and I’d like to conclude by saying whichever site you do choose - video is definitely the next step in selling online.

Pastures New

This week, Meg Whitman announced she will be stepping down at the end of March. Famously stating that no CEO should stay at their post for more than ten years, the end of March marks her own ten as eBay’s Chief Exec.

eBay also announced their fourth-quarter results that happily exceeded expectations. So big news for eBay - however when forecasting their expectations for 2008 they have been slightly more pessimistic, predicting that the slowing economy will have an impact on sales.

With the all the signs pointing toward the dreaded “R” word, one has to wonder what effect this will have on eBay traders. In an ever competitive market which eBay traders will continue to flourish should purchasers inevitable belt-tightening start to bite? I can’t pretend to know the intricacies of macro..or indeed micro economics but surely common sense would have us put our trust in sellers with a good reputation, who continue to offer good products at reasonable prices. If only there was way to set you apart from the crowd and enhance your eBay listings to encourage trust in both the product and you, the seller... At vzaar we think there is a way, and it rhymes with wideo.

John Donahoe is the new man in charge at eBay and we wish him all the best. He’s got big shoes to fill and high expectations to meet, in what seem to be changing times. I’m left wondering, if under new leadership eBay itself will push boundaries, encouraging new ways of selling or whether the eBay users themselves will take the bull by the horns and lead eBay into the future of selling online.

5 become 7

I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you some exciting news. The vzaar family has boomed to 7. Let me introduce to you the 2 new members of the vzaar gang:

Jonathan Conway - who is now our super duper in house developer and
Mauricio Rocha - who is now our super duper in house designer

You may notice that they seem to have proper 'vzaar' job titles. Don't worry - that won't last long - they are just dithering over what to call themselves. Mauricio is devastated "Big Boss" is already taken.

They are settling in quickly and are already planning significant changes to the site - developing it's style and functionality that should make vzaar easier, better and more enjoyable to use. Keep and eye out for the coming changes to vzaar and don't forget to let us know what you think.

Our humble predictions for 2008

  • Tube workers will strike at least 76 times this year.
  • House prices will drop... enough to allow millionaire first time buyers to be in with a shot of buying a bedsit in Bristol.
  • Bros and Bananarama will reform and eclipse all previous record sales in 2008.
    • Whether any of these transpire we will have to wait and only time can prove me wrong, but one thing I can say with more confidence is that in 2008 we will see a revolution in the use of video on the internet.
We are not strangers to video on the internet - YouTube is a household name but now it's time to enhance the power of video for commerce. You can see it integrating into amazon, corporations websites, online advertising already. What about your business? vzaar is here to help you enhance the power of video in your business. Were starting with eBay and that's just the beginning. If you want to include video in your business we want you to use vzaar. Our developers are frantically working as I type to bring video capability to you in a way that's quick and easy, available on eBay or your own websites.

Sign up here so we can let you know when these developments are "fresh off the press" for you to try.

Santa get it wrong this year? Get more for unwanted pressies using vzaar...and buy what you really wanted.

Santa doesn’t ALWAYS get it right. I know, he gave me purple checkered earmuffs... slightly unfair considering how well behaved I was all year. However, my Christmas catastrophe can be someone else’s grail and that’s one of the many reasons I love eBay.

Sell your unwanted gifts using vzaar: make short videos of your items and upload them to your listings in minutes. You’ll make more money and then you can buy what you really wanted!

We hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and is looking forward, as we are, to a magnificent 2008!

Video Ho Ho! Online Sellers in line for a £270M Christmas windfall.

So we recently did quite a big survey to find out what buyers and sellers really think about video being used to sell things online. Apparently nearly half of all online shoppers (46%) have been disappointed with an internet purchase or have shied away from purchasing because they've been unable to see an item properly.

With online sales expected to reach £13.6bn in the run up to Christmas, more and more shoppers are demanding an end to sites that rely solely on static images and text to sell products and services.

Our Chief Geek commented whilst having his morning coffee; “The rise in popularity of video sharing sites is one of the main pillars of Web 2.0, but retailers have yet to embrace the power of video."

Our survey also revealed one in five shoppers would pay an additional 10% for the reassurance of seeing products and services in more interactive detail. 10%!

"In the busy Christmas period, innovative use of video could really help sites stand out from the competition, encourage trust amongst customers and maximize their profits.” he added when I asked him from across the office.

And our survey didn’t stop there! Additional benefits to sellers sites using video are:
Six out of ten (58%) believe sites using video are more professional
Half of all shoppers (52%) say seeing a video makes them more likely to buy
Four out of ten shoppers (42%) have more trust in a site that uses video

Which, frankly, means that video is brilliant. Video Ho Ho indeed!

Using vzaar in YOUR Templates

We've made a change to how we find and replace videos, to make it easier for you to put videos in your own templates.

We've had quite a few people come to us and say they have their own templates which they have smartly designed for their listings, and want to position the video properly in them from the get go. Many users have been revising their listings after the video insert to make sure it's positioned properly. If you used to do this, we've just made it a lot easier for you.

We have a block of HTML code you can insert into your template (on eBay, or using any listing tool like Turbo Lister or seller manager pro). Then when you click to insert a video we pull out this code and replace it with your video.

We think this should make it a lot easier for powersellers who we know have some smart templates that make their auctions and listings look really slick, and were concerned about the vzaar video taking away from this.

If you want to know how this is done or how to do this, please check out our help page on HTML & TEMPLATES.

As always any questions feel free to drop us a comment below or a email from the contact us page

Freshen Up!

You might have noticed we've changed the home page a little (and by a little we really mean quite a lot).

Change is good and it's important to recognise when things aren't quite working right and improve them.

So what's new?

Well we have moved some of the content to the bottom of the page. These panels allow us to communicate with you, more clearly and easily without being distracting. On the original home page they didn't quite fit where they were and were a bit unstructured. This is a bit neater and better positioned and allows you to take them in when you want to and dive into the rest of the site when you don't.

We've also moved the main media player to the top right. We're very proud of our video player and how it is developed with eBay sellers in mind. So we have given it prime position. We also know the help and how to videos are probably less relevant to some of our regular users. Watch this spot. We're working on a super vzaar algorithm that changes the content for new and regular users differently. Hopefully this will make vzaar a bit more interesting for your repeat visits.

We're also doing some internal research and work on how vzaar is helping different people. We're going to highlight this more, as well as start letting you know how you can user video better and how different videos can help you in different ways. Look out for our top 5 tips video coming this week.

We've also changed the video thumbnails are shown. We felt the metadata (that's the information associated with each video like views and item titles) looked a bit messy the way it was presented before. So now you're just see 4 (hopefully interesting) thumbnails and when you mouse over them, we'll show you the metadata. Just click to view the main video.

Finally we've also put a new algorithm in for the thumbnails. We thought it would be interesting to see what people are watching right now. So whenever anyone plays a video, either on vzaar or on eBay we'll show you what's just been viewed. This is real live data of what buyers are actually looking at and watching. Of course the most popular videos will show up more often, but all videos get a shot. Keep an eye on here to see what kind of videos buyers are enjoying.

The most recent videos is as it was originally, just some of the videos uploaded recently. Although we have mixed it up a bit and are picking them randomly from the last 10. Also watch this spot. We're going to start putting some of our favourite videos in here too, when we've finished some of the new code.

Of course whilst change is good, we know we wont get it to everyone's like (I worked on the eBay UK home page change so I know how hard it is to meet everyone's needs). As always drop a comment or contact us with any thoughts you might have on the changes.

eBay University and Parties

Heading into the winter season (for us poor souls in the Northern hemisphere) it’s important to have something to look forward to. And that’d why we’re having a party! Yes, that’s right - a party with our friends at Tamebay this November in Manchester after eBay University.

It’s Tamebay’s 1st birthday on this very day (Congratulations Tamebay!) and it’s vzaar’s...well...we just like parties. If you’re heading over the Manchester (UK) for eBay’s brilliant University on November 10th - we’d love it if you came to pay us a visit and joined in the fun.

There’ll be lots of drinks and food and there is even talk of an opportunity to win loads of stuff that, if you don’t, will probably sell exceptionally well on eBay with the aid of a video...

vzaar in the news

Since vzaar launched last month we've been getting the word out about how great videos are and how they can help you sell on eBay. We thought you might like to have a look at some of the coverage we've received.

Check the out the video from Sky News Technofile and online coverage from Tamebay and Mashable.

eBay.co.uk Half-Price Listing Day on Thursday

If you're looking for a good reason to list your first eBay items using vzaar, then Thursday's Half Price Listing Day on eBay.co.uk might be exactly what you've been waiting for.

With listing fees starting at 2p (there are a number of eligibility criteria so be sure to read the Ts and Cs) it's a good opportunity to experiment with some new lines or shift old stock.

On a cheap listing day lots of sellers will say that the increased number of listings means that their auctions and BINs get lost in the influx. So it's necessary to stand out from the crowd to get your share of the buying action. A video could be just what you're after: it helps buyers make that all important buying decision and gives them a better understanding of what you're selling.

Of course, vzaar is free every day so dust off the digital camera and sharting shooting those videos and prepare to list a bumper batch of items this Thursday.

Never listed with vzaar before? Why not check out our video that explains how easy vzaar is to use.

eBay University in Glasgow

vzaar was very excited to be attending eBay university last weekend in Glasgow. This was our first eBay university and we thought it was brilliant. We were there to encourage new and experienced eBayers alike to start using video in their listings. The response was overwhelmingly positive and I'm very much looking forward to seeing many of the eBayer’s we met on the day videos up on the site.
Very Excited at eBay Uni
It was also good to see so many eBay staff there looking very dashing in their smart black eBay shirts. We also saw lots of familiar faces of eBay - Chris Dawson from Tamebay, the Dudleys from Postal Supplies and the guys from Channel Advisor. Having spoken to some experienced users, they let me know that were already using video and have been using YouTube as a supplier. However on hearing about vzaar they were very excited and much preferred the idea as it:
  1. seemed much easier to use - no messing around with html
  2. it was free of other advertising
  3. and when buyers got to the end of the video, they wouldn’t be encouraged to switch to another users video. Like all sellers - the idea of losing your potential buyer to a link at the end of your video is NOT ideal.
The most interesting thing I noticed after people’s enthusiasm for video and vzaar was skepticism that such a good, helpful service was free. And as I assured everyone I met in Glasgow (at eBay Uni - not EVERYWHERE in Glasgow) vzaar as it is now will always be free. We will however, shortly be introducing more developed functionality which intend charge (very reasonable rates) for. But to reiterate - it will remain, as it is now, a free service. So with our nervousness at attending our first eBay university, we are positively brimming with enthusiasm about attending our second one in Manchester on November 10th. If you are going to be there - do come and pay us a visit and if you’re good we may even take you out for a drink...

New! vzaar's designer listing template!

Well things are moving at great pace here at vzaar. To make your listings even smarter our new offering to you is a very swish vzaar listing template. Never has making a listings look so good, been so easy! (and once again - I’ve just done it without a hiccup which just goes to show how easy it really is!)

Tempalte preview thumbnail

You can now upload your video, choose to create your listing through vzaar, and opt in to using our template. It’s all pretty self explanatory from there and you can even preview what your listing looks like before it goes up.

Better yet, by using our template, you get an extra image in your listings as we grab one from the video you made. How good is that?! Answers on a post card.... or to email us if you can’t find a stamp.

It’s wonderful to see so many of you using the site. In these beginning weeks it’s good to see everyone embracing videos and trying it out. And your videos are only getting better and better!

September 10, 2007

Who needs pictures ...

... when you have video. For a while now, we've added the eBay picture for your listing or auction when you create an auction with video from vzaar. Now we do it when you add your video to an existing auction too.

So no need to worry about getting the picture up, just take a quick video and we'll do the rest. We know a lot of people are ditching cameras although these days and just getting camera phones. However phone manufactures don't make easy to get files off their devices often making this hard. Even the brilliant iPhone isn't supremely easy for
this. Now you can just upload your your video to m.vzaar.com and we'll do the picture for you. Job done.

Don't worry we only do this if you have no picture present. If you have a picture present we leave well enough alone and don't mess with anything. There's also a check box for this, so you can choose not to do if you so chose. Of course we make it so easy, why would you not.

vzaar Lives

We're live today. Five months ago we had an idea. Today we have a live site for eBay sellers to put video into their eBay listings and boy are we happy. Nothing like see the fruits of your labour come together (although in a crazy crazy day) and see people using and viewing your site.

We're now approved and on the official eBay policy in the UK,
Ireland, USA, Spain and Italy & even Down Under. Keep an eye out for more of Europe too.

Words cannot express how glad I am we're now in full running, approved by eBay and able to really move forward with our plans for additional functionality (file under: You-aint-seen-nothing-yet) and to really change eBay selling for the positive. Photos where so 2006.

We'll be at eBay University in both Glasgow (22nd September) and Manchester (10th November). Meanwhile upload a video and get automatically entered into our competition for a great Nikon Coolpix S500.

August 24, 2007

On the pulse

We're on the pulse at vzaar, and you'll notice that the video player now has a heart beat.

At vzaar we listen to our users and our community. Several people mentioned that some of the buyers had said they didn't realise the video was a video, and weren't sure how to play it.

We care a lot about the user experience both for our sellers and their buyers. So a very subtle change to the player, without cluttering the page with extraneous text, nor having a paper clip pop up and ask "It looks like you're thinking of playing a video ..." we feel does the job.

As always let us know what you think and also what your buyers and bidders thing.

A nice small change for the long weekend, have a good one everyone filled with lots of sunshine. Insert your own comments about getting "pulses" racing.

Video on the move...from your mobile

Uploading video from your mobile phone is here! vzaar has developed an easy way for you to upload your videos directly from your mobile phone. This is particularly exciting as lots of people have difficulty uploading simple pictures from their mobiles to their eBay listings and now vzaar has made it possible for video.

I’ve just tried it and it IS actually really easy. I’m pretty terrible with my mobile – my priorities for my mobile being a telephone first and alarm clock second. Sometimes I text. I wasn’t given any instructions and my video from my mobile was up on the site in about 3 minutes.

We think that this is going to be a really exciting part of vzaar. Chief Geek says that mobile phones will soon have all the camera/video/memory quality that you’d expect from equipment made solely for those individual purposes. He says that soon camera phones will see an end to digital cameras. So you heard it here first! (...unless you read it somewhere else.)

July 27, 2007

And then there were 5

It seems like ages since we've spoken here. We've all been mad busy here at vzaar towers preparing to go live (we're calling it v-Day) and telling the world about us. Which brings me to today blog post.

Those of you who are steely eyed will notice that we have an addition to the about me page. Our number's have grown and we are now 5.

The new addition to vzaar is our fabulous Online Herald. The Online Herald started with us two weeks ago, and it feels like she has been here forever. In a good way. It's fabulous to have some start on the team, and feel like one of the team by the end of the first day.

We're counting ourselves very lucky that we have been able to get the Online Herald. She really impressed us all greatly before she started and has exceeded our expectations by several orders of magnitude since then. In face she is so ingrained and important to the team, that when she is off for a few days next week myself and the Social Wizard aren't entirely sure how we'll cope. The office is certainly going to feel a whole lot duller. I'm sure her old boss and team is missing her greatly and rather jealous of our good fortune.

So what's an Online Herald here to do? Well when I said above that we are preparing to tell the world about us, I really meant that she is.

However I'll let her tell you more herself, so look for a post soon. She might even tell you how she came up with v-Day over a pie. Or maybe just what the pie was.

What exactly does soft beta mean?

Today we go into our soft beta launch. And I hear you asking, what the heck is a soft beta?

Well we're live. We're working. We've launched.

However we are a beta. We know there are a few creases to be ironed out. A ton of help files to be written. And the odd bug here or there. But we think we've got a pretty great product ready, and it's far better than "good enough" to use. It's fully functional and most of the things that need tidying up are bits of text and help.

And so we're beta.

But we're not telling anyone about it. Well not just yet. A few friends and former colleagues, and well anyone who happens on us. (If this is you, Hi!) We'll start shouting from the roof tops when we have ironed the last kinks out, but till then, we're live but not telling.

So we're a soft beta.

Thanks for coming by, and if you do find any kinks, let us know. We would be rather appreciative.

June 3, 2007

Welcome

Welcome to the vzaar blog. It's been an exciting few weeks for vzaar and we're delighted to be able to say 'hello' and welcome you to the vzaar beta. We want to revolutionise how people sell on eBay by making it fiendishly simple to add videos to eBay listings.

The site is currently a 'beta' meaning that whilst it's in good shape we know that there's still work to be done. The best way to get the glitches ironed out is to make vzaar available for people to use and see how it goes.

So let us know what you think and let us know if something isn't quite right or could be improved. That's what a beta's for.

We'll keep you updated with information and developments here on the blog so don't forget to check back for the latest news.
